Anterior Head Syndrome
One of the most common structural abnormalities of the spine that we see in our office is Anterior Head Syndrome (AHS). Anterior Head Syndrome is a primary condition of the spine where the head is displaced forward of its normal position which may lead to many different symptoms and/or conditions (secondary conditions).
If you think about it you’ll realize that you see it almost everywhere you look, to one degree or another. Today more people are spending more time at computers, playing video games, driving, laying on the couch and doing many other activities that put them into this type of damaging position.
To get a better understanding of why AHS can cause so many problems I like to use the “bowling ball” explanation. If you hold a bowling ball, 10 to 12Lbs.(the approximate weight of your head), with your hands close to your body you could probably hold it there all day without getting tired, just like having your head directly above your shoulders, were it should be. Now extend your arms forward with that bowling ball and see how long you last.
Imagine what your head is doing to the structures of the neck when it is held forward all day, day in, day out. AHS is a very common structural abnormality as are the aches and pains that it causes. Does this make sense to you?
Options
As a healthcare consumer I understand you have many choices. They are surgery, physical therapy and/or drugs. The important thing to understand is the difference between a temporary patch and more permanent fix.
There are also many chiropractors in the South Bay, most of which are great at adjusting to relieve muscle spasms, pain and increase range of motion.
But correcting the problem is the only way to really make lasting changes.
Frequuently Asked Questions
- How long will my changes last?
It depends on a number of things, such as degree of damage done, age, how compliant the patient is with home & aftercare. - Do you have to crack or twist my neck?
No, we now use a very new technology which is very gentle and needs no twisting or cracking.
